My Dad always was, and will always be, my hero. His love for his family was endless and his work ethic was second to none. I have learned so much from him throughout my life.
I am so very proud to continue on in the footsteps of my Dad by providing delicious homemade strudel, from his fathers original recipe, to those who love it as much as I do.
Dad was a hard working man who was up before dawn every day to prepare for the day's work ahead and finished working most evenings after everyone else had gone home.
He enjoyed planning the week's work to be ready for the upcoming weekend markets, and always had fresh strudels ready to sell.
A proud man who always enjoyed talking to his customers, he loved hearing their positive feedback which gave him his strength after a long, tiring week.
Once at the market, he was in one of his happy places. His many customers and friends looked forward to a visit with him.
Dad valued each and every conversation he had.
My favourite memory of my Grandpa was on my 16th birthday. We were out at Gull Lake. Grandpa cooked me the biggest steak ever! I'm not talking no $20 grocery store steak, this was probably 2.5 times the size! Accompanied by a chocolate bar the size of my forearm.
Grandpa always knew how to go that extra step just to make it memorable!
My favourite memory of Grandpa was his voice. I will cherish the pictures I have of him and the love I felt through him.
Hearing stories through Grandma Janiece allowed me to gain knowledge of what a kind heart he had and a soul that will echo through the world forever.
My fondest memory of Opa was going to visit him in Alberta when I was a kid and getting spoiled with all the food and love he could give us. His big belly and infectious smile were always something I looked forward to seeing! Love you Opa
My favorite memory of Opa was his strudel! I was really young when he was alive but I do remember how good his strudel was, and his laugh.
I met Gunther in Red Deer, Alberta in 1990. He had turned in my purse, that I had left in my shopping cart to the local police department. The police called me to say my purse was turned into them and told me that the man who brought it in was very nice and that I should take him to dinner. That was the beginning of our beautiful relationship.
Gunther worked very hard to build Strudelmeister's Bakery and often travelled to summer and winter markets in central Alberta, Edmonton and Calgary.
I was honoured to be beside Gunther in the building of Strudelmeisters bakery until his passing on September 1997.
Gunther was a charming, charismatic, handsome, loving, hardworking husband, father, step father, and grandfather. Many of his customers became friends for many years.
I love you Gunther. And will miss you always.
Janice, Mrs Strudelmeister.
Our beautiful sister Donna passed away in 1999. As her family we would like to post a tribute to Gunther on Donna’s behalf and with our love.
Gunther and Donna were married in 1964 and he was part of our family until his passing, even though Donna and Gunther had parted ways they remained good friends.
Gunther was a fun-loving husband and brother-in-law who had a gift for baking his famous strudel. It was Donna’s brother Ed who first called him the Strudelmeister. Gunther's love for his craft was evident whenever he would bake his strudel, even though for many years it was only made for special occasions.
Gunther would be so proud that Heidi is carrying on in the family dream as the Strudelmeister’s Daughter!
With love from Donna’s family: Joan, Diane, Linda, Gwen, Ed, Rob, and Lorie.
